Philosophy: Research

This guide suggests resources and strategies for research on topics in philosophy.

Research Tips

This page has help for finding information, specific resources, and research hints for the area of philosophy.

Finding Philosophy Books

In addition to Millikin's Library Catalog, don't forget that the I-Share Catalog gives you access to the collections of 90 academic libraries across Illinois.

Since many of the classical philosophy texts are old enough to be in the public domain, copies of them may be found online for free. For example, Project Gutenberg has a sizable collection of free philosophy e-books. You might also try LibriVox for audio versions of classic philosophy texts.

Finding Philosophy Articles

Use this guide's Articles tab to find Staley Library databases that provide access to philosophy articles.

There are also a number of open access philosophy journals available on the Internet. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) provides a listing with links to many of these journals.

If you are looking for articles by a contemporary philosopher, it is often worthwhile to see if they have a personal website on which they provide links to their articles. For example, the contemporary ethicist Jeff McMahan has links to many of his publications on his website.

Videos and Sound Recordings

Videos, either on VHS or DVD, and sound recordings can be found using Millikin Library Discovery.

Search for your topic in the catalog and then choose "Resource Type" from the choices on the left and limit your search to DVDs, audio CDs, etc.

You can also select "Advanced Search" next to the main search box and use the "Material Types" option to limit your search to the preferred format.

Staley Library subscribes to several streaming video databases, such as Filmakers Library Online, that have videos on the topic of philosophy.
