Finding Associations & Organizations

Many professions are represented by organizations or associations that often compile statistics about the profession and thus can be excellent sources of information. Just be aware of potential bias as the associations and organizations will often be advocating for your group.

  • Using Google Advanced Search enter the name of your field along with the word and the word "association" or "organization" in the all these words box and ".org" in the site or domain box. Typing something like “professional nursing organization OR association site:.org” in the main Google search box will do the same thing.
  • When you find a potential site, look for links titled "publications," "news," "resources," or "data" to find news and information on the profession. Be aware that some associations charge for this information or only make it available to their members.
  • Be creative! You may have to do multiple searches using different terms for your profession/field to find an association. You may also try searching for a broader field, such as searching for "theatre" even if you are only interested in technical theatre.

More terms to try when looking for organizations related to your field:

  • Center
  • Society
  • Consortium
  • Network
  • Operation
  • Association
  • Project
  • Organization
  • Academy
  • National Foundation
  • Education Association
  • National Association
