COVID-19 and Staley Library Services

This guide provides information about current library services, resources, and research & instruction support in light of the COVID-19 epidemic. We appreciate your patience as things change, and your assistance in complying with current public health recommendations.

Hours: Staley Library is closed until further notice. Select library staff will be checking in several days each week to perform services such as processing article interlibrary loan requests, and requests for book chapters.

Returns: Returning students, faculty, and stafff: at this time, please hold on to any library materials checked out to you, as they will not become overdue or "lost" until further notice. Returns will be accepted once operations resume.

Graduating students, or any other Millikin University library patrons not returning to Millikin: return materials to us via the drop slot on the west (left) side of the main (south) entrance of the University Commons, or via the mail:

Please review these options to use library services from home, rather than coming in to the UC:

  • Research/Reference Assistance:
    • Use our online chat reference, available in this guide, or from the library homepage to get research assistance from a librarian.
    • Use our email address to consult with a librarian: refdesk@millikin.edu (Zoom meetings may be scheduled with a librarian through email)
  • Library Online Databases:
    • The majority of the library's database subscriptions can be accessed remotely. To do so, please first sign-in to myMillikin, then click on the button labeled "Library Databases" in the myMillikin "Academics" menu. From here, select the database you wish to search.
    • If you need assistance, please contact the library via online chat or email (refdesk@millikin.edu)
  • Google Scholar:
    • Enable your Google Scholar preferences to recognize Millikin's online journal collections. (On the main Google Scholar page, click the three lines, select "Settings," click Library Links, search for "Millikin," check boxes next to Millikin options, and save.)
  • E-books:
    • Staley Library Online Catalog: To see what e-books are available from Staley Library, access our online catalog, do your search, and then, on the left side of the screen, limit to "Availability: Online" and Resource Type: Books."
    • Proquest eBooks: Thousands of eBooks from a variety of scholarly publishers and University presses.
    • JSTOR eBooks: In your JSTOR search, look under the search boxes for "Narrow by- Item Type" and check the box that says "Books" to limit to eBooks.
    • Cambridge Core eBooks: A collection of eBooks including books in the Cambridge Companions, Cambridge Histories, and Cambridge Elements series, as well as some textbooks. Topics include history, the arts, music, theatre, philosophy, and religion.
    • LearningExpress: selected eBooks on test prep (GMAT, LSAT, MAT, MCAT, Pharmacy), college prep and skills, and career prep and skills.
    • Google Books does allow online access to portions of some books.
    • Internet Archive is another source of free e-books.
    • National Emergency Library a collection of books that supports emergency remote teaching, research activities, independent scholarship, and intellectual stimulation while universities, schools, training centers, and libraries are closed.
    • Other digital book collection options are listed here.
    • Check your local public library's website to see if they have sources of e-books. Some common digital book apps include: Hoopla, CloudLibrary, and Overdrive/Libby (several of these also include music and video content as well).
  • Streaming Video:
  • Interlibrary Loan:
    • We will continue to process your interlibrary loan article requests and requests for copies of articles from journals Millikin owns to deliver to you online via ILLiad as long as we remain staffed.
    • We can also scan book chapters for books owned by Millikin to deliver to you online via ILLiad.
    • As of 3/16/20, all I-Share requesting and statewide library delivery has been temporarily suspended; I-Share materials will not become overdue until further notice.
      • Any unfilled requests that are in the system will be allowed to expire unfilled and will not be "promoted" to other libraries.
  • Renewing Library Materials:
    • Renewal options have been extended to allow for more renewals and fewer overdue book, score, video, etc. worries. Go to our online catalog, sign-in to your account via myMillikin, and look at the checked-out items under your account. Check the box next to the item you wish to renew, then click on the button "Renew Selected Items."
    • Until further notice, I-Share items and Millikin items will not become overdue (as of 3/16/2020). While due dates will not change unless you renew materials, the system will not count them as overdue, send patrons overdue notices, or generate library account blocks.
    • If you need assistance, please contact the library via chat or email (refdesk@millikin.edu)
  • Book Returns:
    • Until further notice, I-Share items and Millikin items will not become overdue (as of 3/16/2020). While due dates will not change unless you renew materials, the system will not count them as overdue, send patrons overdue notices, or generate library account blocks.
