Introduction

This guide will assist you in finding sources for your writing projects (concentrating on articles) and provide resources and practice with APA style. There is also a reminder of how to request articles through interlibrary loan when you find an article that is not in a library subscription database.

Learning Goals

To incorporate information literacy competency in their field into their writing, the graduate nursing student will:

  • Develop a list of appropriate search terms based on the main concepts of their research question, making use of synonyms, related, broader, and narrower terms when relevant
  • Select appropriate research databases for their research question and conduct searches in them using relevant keywords and basic Boolean logic
  • Select evidence-based sources based on a working knowledge of literature in nursing-related fields, how it is produced, and the value of and differences between potential sources of information
  • Revise their search strategy, as needed, based on the relevancy and quality of their results to their research question
  • Request articles relevant to their research question using the interlibrary loan service when they are unavailable in library database subscriptions
  • Seek the assistance of a librarian, when needed
